Assignment #4 Landscape

I examined the photo, The Pyramids of Sakkarah, From the North East, 1858 by Francis Frith. I chose this landscape because I think the pyramids are so beautiful and that they were onced used by people a long time ago. I also like the old look of the photograph that you can't get anymore. Those are my favorites. I have not been to Egypt before, but I would like to go. It is one of those wonders that everyone should see before they die. It's really funny to see those two random men lying around in the sand. One of my favorite parts in the photograph is seeing that one of the pyramids is still intact, while the other pyramid is falling apart. It really shows how old the pyramids actually are, and how wore down the weather makes them. There is no color used on the photograph, but I like the old looking black and white. It's very effective because the color reflects how old the pyramids really are, and if it was taken in color today again like that, it would not be nearly as effective. The photograph has a strong composition because of the one pyramid that's falling down, and the two men laying around. It couldn't be taken any other way. I would not change one thing about the picture. It is very effective. I would probably just sit there and stare at them for a very long time, it's one of those things you can only see once in your life. I would defidently put myself standing on top of the back pyramid with my arms straight up.

Movement

I did the photo Detroit Street Scene by Harry Callahan. It was taken in 1943. In this photo, there are many people walking and carrying different objects that express them. The movement is the people walking to their different destinations. This picture captures the peoples' expressions and feelings at this time. The lady that is the main focus looks like she's stressed about something, like she's walking to work and is nervous. It captures her, and tells her story. Movement is important because it shows that life still goes on, and it wouldn't be effective at all if they were all just standing in a line. Life goes on as we know it, and even if there is an issue or complication, just go on. I think the shadows, the lampost and the clock are all elements that contribute to the effect that the photo gives off. The clock kind of shows that time also is continuous to keep us moving. Them all wearing jackets shows that it must be fall or winter and the lady wearing the fur coat shows that she must have some money. The picture shows all the many personalities and lives. One goal for my work would be capturing a good subject that wears their life on their face, where you can think your own story to what could be happening in their lives. The subject moving can make the viewer think what's going to happen next?

Assignment 2

Irving Penn, Purple Tulip 1967

My picture is Purple Tulip by Irving Penn. The colors in this picture are a purple-pink, light pink, and green. These colors all blend really prettily together, and it is also very natural not something put together. It’s also interesting because there are water droplets on the flower like it just rained. The picture makes me think of a spring day where the sun is just starting to come up and you walk outside and it starts to rain. I think it would look really interesting if the photographer played with the contrast a little bit, but then the background is white. It’s not a strong picture I don’t think, but it is still absolutely beautiful.

Movement

Critical Response Movement

1. The two photographs show motion in a small amount of time.

2. The horse picture shows motion by capturing the horse galloping in 1/1000 of a second without any blur. The second picture of the man shows motion by showing all the different times the picture was taken and adding it to the same picture in a short time span.

3. The purpose for the horse picture was to show and prove that when a horse gallops, all four hooves end up in the air. The purpose of the picture of the man walking down the staircase is based on Marcel Duchamps painting, Nude Descending a Staircase and is a replica of it. It is an art photo.
